I spent a morning at Vin Sullivans, a fishmonger near Abergavenny, trying to paint a very large and ugly cod. I had meant to paint a hake, but by the time I got there, he had sold it. In the end I took a mackerel home and painted that in my studio, much more comfortable than in the shop.
I have set up this blog so that I have a record of the paintings and drawings that I produce. In this way I hope to be able to improve on my earlier work and see where I am going in terms of subject matter. I was initially a botanical painter and have been feeling rather restricted of late. Going to life drawing classes regularly in Usk has helped enormously, so has working with other very talented artists, as we bounce ideas off each other. Working on ones own invariably leads to isolationism and stagnation. I have been encouraged to start this by John Meredith whose blog, makes for interesting reading. He spends his spare time sketching in Starbucks, whilst I have to keep the weeds at bay in our garden.
