Hippeastrums 2

My sister gave me this Amarylis/Hippeastrum last year - 2009 and it flowered just after Christmas. I put it in the greenhouse and watered and fed it with the tomatoes and to my surprise and joy found it had not one but two buds on it this year. I have painted it again and this time started when it was just a bud. I used gum arabic on the petals which may not show up in the photograph. The colour is so rich, I used a combination of reds, scarlet, cadmium, alizarin crimson and even a little permanent rose in places. I used indigo with alizarin to get the really dark inside. Not sure if the first edition is better than the second.

Exhibition in London

I am joining 9 other artists in an exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture at 54 the Gallery, Shepherd Market, London, beginning on Monday April 18th until Sunday April 24th (10.00am - 4.00pm) - We are not expecting many to come on Easter Sunday.
I will have 8 paintings in the exhibition, mostly watercolours, but there is one pastel and this week I will endeavour to put all of them on this blog - I have been having difficulty putting text and photos on at the same time recently, so finger's crossed.
One is already on the blog, namely the dish of sardines published some days ago.

Life drawing at Usk

I saw the review of an exhibition of Watteau's drawings in the RA magazine and thought I would try to do a drawing in just three chalks, black, red/brown and white. Unfortunately the red/brown is too dark, but this was the first try.

It is not my day. I don't seem to be able to post an image together with my text. If I put an image on first, I cannot write text, and vice versa. I thought I was just being stupid. but discover others have the same problem

Day with Neil Bally

I went to Neil Bally in Talgarth for a two day course in drawing and painting.  Sadly I had got the dates wrong and missed out on the second day. He had set up a whole lot of dishes with  different fish, plus  backgrounds of various colours. Still life is not something I have done before, but it was quite inspiring.
Four little sardines on a dish!  Graham says they are spinning.

Sunday 2 January 2011

Oh dear! It is such ages since I added anything to this blog, I have almost forgotten how to download my pictures, and now have managed to put something on here, but cannot add any text. Just before Christmas we were inundated with snow and not surprisingly our model failed to appear, so we drew out teacher Jennifer. It might bave been better if her hair was loose, but it made for a colourful composition.
